The Earthwalk offers an intuitive way to explore Google Earth. Users navigate the earth’s surface via five footpads: the arrows correspond to the cardinal directions, while pressing a pad together with the center pad increases the navigation speed. Activating the pads marked with plus or minus allows for zooming in or out, respectively. The installation was developed by Jens Franke and Thomas Gläser (www.thomasglaeser.de) as part of the Arduino Workshop at the Design College HfG Schwäbisch Gmünd (www.hfg-gmuend.de) in winter 2006, under the guidance of Massimo Banzi, one of the inventors of Arduino (www.arduino.cc).
